Teaching Assistant

June - July 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

I worked as a TA with the Power Scholars Academy with YMCA and Richmond Public Schools with middle school ages. I loved the community and dedication of YMCA employees to the four pillars of the organization: Honesty, Caring, Responsibility, and Respect. We truly had a fun and enriching time, not only in academic classes, but at field trips and the enrichment classes. I got to know the students and my colleagues as individuals and it was a great and rewarding way to spend my summer.

Summer Camp

May - August 2018 • Chesterfield County, VA

What I liked

I love this job. I have done it for three summers total and I loved every minute of it. I was able to be promoted twice in my three years, allowing me to work with all the children in the camp, to take on more and more responsibility, and to continue to build the relationships with the parents that I had started my first summer.

What I wish was different

My director changed every summer so I would have liked a more consistent head of the camp, but that is up to the head office. Also, this past summer, my director did not handle issues within the staff as well as I would have hoped.

Advice

Listen to the children: they are brutally honest about a lot of things and they will also tell you how they feel but you occasionally will have a child that you need to talk to a bit before they open up, take the time to build that connection. Also, if you have a problem with a coworker, talk to them first before going to the supervisor. However, do not feel bad going to the supervisor if the co-worker isn't doing what they are supposed to be. This is a hard jo, you're outisde all day handling all kinds of problems and if they are not heling they are hindering you, then you need to say something.

Assistant Site Supervisor

May - August 2018 • Chesterfield County, VA

What I liked

I liked being able to work with children all day since I want to be a teacher.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to switch around my hours so they could be more flexible instead of being the only one opening the whole summer camp everyday.

Advice

I would say to try not to let little things bother you so much.
