Technical Theater Intern
Position Overview
Charlottesville Opera seeks a reliable and motivated Technical Theater Intern to join our technical team for the summer season. This position offers dynamic, hands-on experience in a professional opera environment, working alongside the Technical Director, Production Manager, and other skilled artisans and crew.
The Technical Theater Intern will support multiple aspects of production, gaining exposure to scenic construction, props, backstage operations, and the execution of live performances.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with scenic construction and shop projects
- Run errands as needed by Department Heads
- Support the Scenic Charge Artist with basic painting and shop clean-up
- Collaborate with the props department as needed
- Assist with load-in and load-out of scenery and equipment
- Serve as deck crew or backstage support during rehearsals and performances
- Contribute to general production needs as they arise
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Previous technical theater experience required
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to climb stairs and work in a physically active environment
- Strong work ethic, adaptability, and willingness to learn
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced setting
- Must reside in the Charlottesville area and have reliable transportation
Time Commitment
- Approximately 30 hours per week
- Availability required from June 5 through July 21
Requirements
- One professional reference who can speak to technical theater experience
